Safeway Ending Double ($1) Coupons in AZ ~ It’s Official

safeway_coupon_policy

Well, it’s official … Safeway is ending their generous coupon policy of raising all coupons to $1,  everywhere in Arizona & Gallup, NMCoupons will be taken at face value, beginning June 3, 2015 Yesterday, I wrote about it here, but it wasn’t confirmed.

I was able to get an official answer from the company.  I’ll copy it below.

First, I urge you to look at it fairly, without intense anger.  It won’t help, so save your energy for finding deals.  We’ll still find them.  Don’t worry!

I will say that I’m disappointed.  I’ve lived in Arizona all my life and have used coupons my entire adult life — even in my late teen years!  I have loved having one of the most generous coupon policies in the US, for a long, long time.  As time went on, I knew it probably wouldn’t last forever.  I don’t like that this will affect our wallets, but the reality is that Safeway is a business.  They need to make money to stay in business.  If they feel like it affects their bottom line too much, it’s their call.  On the other hand, it’s our decision whether we shop there or not.  They have competition and they know it.  They’re not dumb enough to think this decision won’t impact their business.  I’m sure it came with much deliberation, thought, and future strategy plans.

This will definitely affect the way I shop.  Most likely, I’ll be doing more ad matching at Walmart (even some at Target), with little incentive to make a special trip to Safeway.  The exception will be sales on meat.  Meats are hard to ad match at Walmart.

We’ll have to adjust our budgets some, along with our thinking on when to stock up.  The “buy it now” price on some things will be going up.  It doesn’t mean we still won’t get free things (elsewhere) and get good deals.  It will probably mean that paying 50¢ for toothpaste or Angel Soft is now a rock bottom price, not free.  You may want to explore what CVS & Walgreens have to offer and learn how their programs work, if you don’t already.  Target is another place to stack up some ways to save and end up with a super deal.  You can still get toiletries and other items cheap!  And, don’t forget that Bashas’ is still doubling coupons.

** All links given above are to current shopping lists, if you want to check them out.

Honestly, I feel like my frustration is more with the TLC show “Extreme Couponing,”  but I realize it doesn’t help to blame them.  I really can’t even claim it’s all their fault.  It’s not.  Some would even say that I’m as much to blame as them.  I can understand that, to some degree.  Some of you saw that show and were inspired, even hunted down this website after viewing it.  Others were appalled.  I guess I have a love/hate feeling towards it.  I love that the show opened people’s eyes to seeing that they could save huge amounts of money.  That’s really why I started this website, so we have that in common.  I hate that it seemed to turn couponing into a competitive sport, where rules were often not followed and losers ended up (sometimes) being you and me … Juli, coupon user who likes to save for her family, but not rent a U-haul to get things home.  (Okay, slight exaggeration –  in some cases!)  The reality is … enough people got “extreme” and the stores couldn’t sustain their profit margin.  I get that.  It doesn’t help to point fingers at who got too much (how can you really judge “too much?” — okay, sometimes it seems easy!?!) or who took advantage of what.  For now, it is what it is.

I already wish for the “good old days!”  But, as much as I wish for those days, I also wish that everyone would stay determined to save money for their family.  It can be done — at Safeway and beyond, with or without coupons or coupons with added value.  I’ll share some more general, tangible ways, in the coming weeks.

If you want to give Safeway one last shop before it ends, make sure you check out their list here.  Let us know if you find something we should add.  We all want our last minute deals!  Too bad I’m in California.  Well, for the last shop — not for the weather!  :)

Here’s their official statement:  (Received on 5/29/15)

Good afternoon Juli:

I received your email from my colleague regarding changes to Safeway’s Coupon Policy.  The information you’ve received is correct.

Recently Safeway began investing major resources to strengthen its weekly ad flyer by lowering prices on popular items featured each week.  Additionally, on Weds. June 3, 2015, Safeway locations in Arizona and Gallup, NM will begin Senior’s Day the first Wednesday of each month.  This promotion will offer shoppers, who are 55 and older, 10% off their grocery purchases.

Consequently Safeway locations, in Arizona and Gallup, NM, have initiated a change to its coupon policy.  Beginning June 3, 2015 coupons will be accepted at face value and no longer doubled.  Safeway’s new coupon policy aligns with many other grocery retailers.

Currently Safeway locations in Arizona and Gallup, NM have signs displayed at all registers to provide advance notice to customers regarding the  coupon policy change.

Safeway’s Just For U app is available to shoppers and is another convenient way to cash-in on extra savings while shopping at Safeway.  Signing up for Just For U is easy.  Visit:   www.safeway.com/Just-For-U

Again, thank you for your email.
Sincerely,
Nancy

Is Couponing Worth It?

coupons_&_scissors

I was asked (after hearing Safeway will probably be accepting coupons at face value in AZ soon, more here) …

Is couponing worth it?

If you want the short answer … yes, for me.

If you want the long answer, grab your coffee (maybe it’s a smoothie this time of year?) and snuggle up to your computer or mobile, as I share my thoughts.

When, I say “couponing,” I mean using paper coupons (printable, from Sunday paper, & misc. coupons that may show up) or digital coupons you can load directly to your shopping cards.

I only use coupons for products I will use or have a specific purpose for (donating, giving to friends, etc).  I’m not a true “extreme couponer.”  I’ve only seen a couple of the TLC shows, but I’m nothing like what I’ve seen.  I like to call myself an “intentional couponer.”  I use them wisely and save a bunch of money!  I don’t need a trailer to get my groceries home and one bottle of mustard will usually last us until it expires, around my house.

For me, couponing will still be worth it, even if coupons are taken at face value.  (Keep in mind that most of the country can only redeem coupons at face value and many do it.)  There is still money to be saved.

I’m a firm believer that pennies add up to quarters, add up to dollars, add up to $20, etc.  I’ll even still bend down to pick up a penny.  The bonus is a little bit of exercise, if nothing else.  :)

On the other hand, I also value my time.  If I’m finding that saving $3 is taking me an hour, I won’t do it.  My time is worth more than $3/hour.  On the other hand, if it takes me an hour to get ready to go to the grocery store (or an extra hour to run somewhere else & look at ads, etc.) and I end up saving $30 (random number for example) … totally worth my time.  I should say … usually!  There are weeks when I don’t have an hour to spare to save $30, as much as I want to.  I value my sanity more than thirty bucks.

As much as I love the savings and the financial freedom it helps bring to my family, it’s not for everyone.  I have different time, priorities, and needs than you do.  Don’t blindly use coupons, without counting the cost.  There are costs.  I would never deny that!

  • Time — What “wages” are acceptable to you?  Remember, it’s tax-free “income.”
  • Space — How will you store surplus?  Do you have room or need to stick with basics?
  • Sanity — Does the extra clutter (coupons or treasures you get) drive you nuts?
  • Need — Do you need to do it to make ends meet?
  • Want — Do you enjoy using the savings for something else that makes the effort worthwhile?
  • Respect — Does your spouse value the fact that you do it or does it drive him/her nuts?
  • Cost — How much are you spending on newspapers, ink, paper, buying coupons, gas, whatever?

Take a serious inventory of the above list.  Ponder it and calculate it.  If you feel it’s more of a burden, stop — unless you feel it’s a necessity!  (Well, I don’t see how you can resist clicking and loading a few digital coupons.)  :)  Yes, I know I run a coupon website.  Well, I don’t fully see it that way.  I run a money saving website, that often involves coupons, but there’s much more!

Whatever you end up doing with your coupon usage, I hope you stick around Bargain Believer.  We’ll always share deals that have coupons, but we go beyond that.  We want you to have fun with your family, without spending a bunch.  We’ll point you to those deals and other bargains we just can’t seem to keep to ourselves.  As long as there are businesses competing, there will always be bargains out there and we’ll help you find them!  We may even tempt the non-coupon users out there to click and load a digital coupon or even print a coupon every once in awhile.  The coupon/non-coupon line can be crossed at any time.  :)

I was going to share some other ways to save, but I’m afraid you’re falling asleep now.  And, I’m out of time.  Stay tuned … more on saving (beyond coupons) soon!

What do you think?

Safeway Ending Double ($1) Coupons in AZ?

safeway_coupon_sign(Thanks for the pic, Nicol!)

It’s official … update here.

We’ve been hearing rumors for awhile, that Safeway was going to stop making coupons worth $1 (in AZ) soon, even with a specific date of June 3rd.  (Several of you have commented or emailed, saying your cashier told you.)  I only semi-believed the cashiers since I heard similar, for about nine months before Fry’s changed their policy.

But … I now believe it, though it can’t be confirmed.  Here’s my long story long …

Someone in Tucson sent Nicol the picture above (said we could share).   I know a picture is worth 1,000 words, but I still wanted to confirm it.  I called a couple stores in the Valley to see if it was going to be everywhere.  Two locations I called said it was true.  Another store asked me where I heard it, then told me they weren’t allowed to confirm or deny.  They were supposed to direct people to their corporate office.  Even though I felt like that was a confirmation, I called.

At corporate, I got someone who said she lives in Arizona and shops in Phoenix.  She said stores in Arizona don’t double coupons.  What!??!  The stores near me do and I’ve never heard that any of your stores don’t.  She acted like I was dumb and didn’t have a clue about Safeway or coupons.  I told her I had a website and wanted an answer to share with people.  That convinced her to go ask for a “real” answer.  Unfortunately, as “real” as it gets is that each store can do whatever they want.  It’s up to each manager.  I asked her why so many stores are deciding to end it now and her only reply was that not all ever did it and managers could do anything they want.  Okay.

So … my advice to you is to call your store or ask the next time you’re in.  I’d love to hear what you find out and for you to help others, too!

If you would leave the location (address and/or cross streets) and what they tell you, in the comments that would be great.  Facebook comments are fine, but I’d love a comment on the website below this post, too.  It will be easier for people to find and then they’ll all be together, to reference later.  If there are enough and it’s really varying, I might compile a list.  Honestly, I’m skeptical that it’s going to vary (at least for very long), but ??

I don’t even know which locations I called, since I just clicked on the map and called.  My regular store wouldn’t answer the phone and my secondary store is the one who told me to call corporate.  (It’s at Elliot & McClintock in Tempe.)

Here’s a link to store locations, so you can find your neighborhood Safeway’s number

And, just in case you want it, here’s the corporate number  1-877-723-3929

Sunday Coupon Preview ~ 3 Coming on 5/31

If you like to peek ahead to see what coupons you should expect on Sunday, I have them listed for you below.  It looks like we should be getting three inserts this Sunday . . .one Red Plum (RP), one Smart Source (SS) and one Proctor & Gamble (P&G).  Remember, coupons are sometimes regional, so there aren’t any guarantees what we’ll get.

az_republic_3_for_1If you don’t get the Sunday coupons, you can get the Sunday and Wednesday Arizona Republic delivered for only $12 for 3 months, if you haven’t been a subscriber in the past 30 days.   I have verified that this is the best rate they currently have available.  You pay for one month, get two for free.  That works out to approximately $1 per week!  The key is that you need to cancel in three months, if you decide not to continue at full price, since it’s an autopay offer.  I’ve often called to cancel a promotional rate and they’ve extended it, but no guarantees on that.

Here’s what we hope to get: (I bolded my favorites)

Pogo Pass Winner & 60% off for Everyone Else!

pogo_mercury

Congrats to Shelly G (shel…@go.org).  She won a free Pogo Pass.  (I have notified her by email and she has 48 hour to reply.)

If you weren’t the winner, make sure you check out the details.  I’m not sure there’s a kid out there (or adult!) that wouldn’t like something on the pass.

They’re 60% off, with this link or the code BARGAIN.
