Lower Your Cox Bill?

I saw various promotions in yesterday's Arizona Republic for Cox.  We use Cox for internet and our home phone.  One promotion was for less than we are paying for our internet, so I called to see if we could get it.

The prices listed in their ad are (for new customers, for 6 months only):
$19.99 High Speed Internet (any speed)
$29.99 Advanced TV
$9.95 Digital Telephone
$25 / $25 / $25 Bundle (not sure what this is)

They told me I could pay $19.99 for the same speed we have now (not "any speed" since I wasn't a new customer).  Our rate used to be $37.99 for 3MB and it will return to that rate after six months.  That's $108 saved in six months, so I'm happy with that.

I called about a week ago to check on higher speed pricing and/or to see if I could get a better rate.  At that time, they told me I couldn't get a better rate.  It might be worth a call, even if you called recently.

I'm not exactly sure what the rules are (mentioned something about "since I had a home phone"), but it's worth checking into.  The same is true about your cable, cell phone, or any other recurring monthly bill you have.  You might be surprised that they're willing to lower your price!

  1. I wanted to comment that you mentioned trying this of OTHER subscriptions as well.
We have Dish Network, but barely watch TV.  I called and told them I was thinking of cancelling because you can stream programming online through my TV.
Turns out they have an "Economy" package for $15 per month.  I still get the channel's I like, Food Network, comedy central, History channel, and even Local and some HD channels.  I asked if this was a "contract price", and it wasn't…$15 for satellite TV.
Thanks for the Tip on Cox.  We pay $53 now, after their price hike.  I thought I was at a loss because we dont have many internet options where I am.  Just Century Link, and they are the same price if you don't get a phone line.

    1. These calls are worth making!  Thanks for sharing, Dawn.

  2. Will definitely be calling today!  Thanks for the deal!!

    1. I’m curious how it goes for people. Please let me know!

  3. Definitely call and ask! I'm on the 7MB plan. The 3MB isn't fast enough for me since I work from home and stream all of my TV online. I've been paying $29.99 for a while. I call just before that promotion expires, and so far it's been extended for 6 months every time I call.

    1. I've always heard that, but I had just called and they said they couldn't do anything.  (On my list of things to do was to call Qwest, or whatever it's called now, but I never got to it.)  I figured I was wasting my time, but am glad I did it again.  We need to get a faster connection too, but this deal might slow us down.  I'm online a lot with Bargain Believer and other things and there are times when the boys want to play Xbox live and the girls want to watch Netflix — all at the same time.  It's rare and not overly critical, but something has to go at that time!  Hmmm . . . maybe I'll call and ask for $29.99 for the 7MB.  Thanks for the specific numbers.  I think I will!

    2. Well, that was easy!  I just lost my $108 savings, down to $48ish, but I'm thrilled!  :)  It's somewhat frustrating since I just asked if I could upgrade for less and they told me I couldn't yesterday AND the week before.  The best answer they had was that I could pay $5 more instead of the normal rate, to go to the next step.  That would have been $42.99 for faster or $19.99 for the same.  I just couldn't do it!  :(  Now, for $29.99 I went for it!  In the end, I'm still saving over what I was paying.  I marked my calendar to remember to call again in 6 months since I'm not sure we want to pay the full rate at that time.  I figure we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.  Thanks, Jess!

      1. So glad it worked out well for you!

  4. Let me get this straight.  They can choose to honor the new customer deal for an existing customer, amounting to $108 in savings over the 6 mo. period, and you're guaranteed that you'll be returned to the old rate afterward?

    1. Make sure you ask all those questions and verify it, but that's what I was told.  Well, actually they told me they couldn't honor the new customer rate since that was for any speed.  I had to keep my existing speed.  (They said there was a different promotion where I could upgrade my speed for $5, but that would have been $5 over my existing price.  I was confused on that for awhile and ready to go for it since we want to try a higher speed.)  So, ask questions since everyone has things bundled differently and who knows what they have going on for different accounts! They told me exactly what my next prorated bill would be and assured me that it would return to my normal rate after that 6 months, not more.  I asked that a couple times!!  BUT, I have no idea what exactly qualified me, so make sure you double check everything!  She did tell me she wasn't allowed to "make up promotions," so I'm assuming it's legit and out there in some form, for everyone who asks.  If you call, let me know what you find out.  I figure $108 is equal to a lot of coupons and a lot less effort!!  :)
