AMAZING Deal on Produce ~ $10 for 60lbs!! ~ Market on the Move ~ Saturday

See that picture above?
That's what my sister got for $10!!
There are a bunch of cucumbers underneath all that too.
Update #2: I'm leaving this post up, just so you can remember to look into it in the fall, after it starts up again.
Update: I got a call back from Ethel, the co-founder, and she confirmed that all the sites will have produce tomorrow!
She learned about this last weekend as she was picking up her Bountiful Basket (which she said she won't order again, but some like it).
Market on the Move gives you two boxes to fill with as much produce as you want, for $10! One is flat, one is rather large. They say about 60lbs can fit in them. My sister said she didn't stuff hers as much as she could have. They limited the melons to one per order. (Thanks for the picture and information, Lynn!)
Their website indicates that it's for needy families and I wanted to clarify that before I posted about it. I went last week and talked to one of the directors and another volunteer. They both said anybody could come get the produce. The money from the location I went to was going toward medical supplies in the Philippines. It sounded like they were glad to share the produce with anyone and bring in additional income for their project. They encouraged you to share it with neighbors and friends. Believe me, you'll need to — unless you have a huge family or if you freeze or can a lot of it.
I went to a different location than my sister, later in the day, and didn't get quite the variety. (They were completely out of the melons. My tomatoes didn't look as good as hers, but were still edible.) I got Mexican squash, cucumbers, green beans, eggplants, jalapenos, and tomatoes. I gave some away and ended up prepping a lot of beans and freezing them. I would do it again, if the location was convenient. It's an amazing deal! Some locations have shut down for the summer season, but a few remain in Phoenix, Glendale, and Tucson.
My disclaimer is that last week, there was a location listed that didn't end up having the event. I just left a message with the representative that I talked to last week, asking her if they were still set to be at all locations. I will update this post if I hear back from her. If I don't hear back . . . you're on your own. I hope you find it worth you time. All locations are confirmed! (Thank you, Ethel, co-founder of The 3000 Club.) Remember to get there early for best selection!
Here are the locations they have listed: (Some are also listed for Sunday, but Saturday will have the best selection.)

Hey Juli-
Did you get a chance to go this weekend? If so, how was the produce selection?
Yes, I went to the location off Bell (by my sister's). It wasn't as good as what my sister bought the week before, but it was certainly worth $1. I split it with her and then gave some away and still have plenty left. They had peaches this time. You had to dig a little, but there were a lot of good ones. Besides that, it was roma tomatoes, yellow squash, jalapenos, green bell peppers & cucumbers. They also let you take one watermelon and one honey dew. I definitely think it's worth the money and is something you can easily split with somebody and get waaaay more than a $5 value out of it. If you fill your boxes, it's much more than most families could use.
If you haven't tried ad matching at Walmart, give it a try on a week where you see a lot of good deals and you don't want to drive all over to get them. It's saved me so much time, though you can't 100% guarantee they'll have everything. I'm flexible each week and don't usually care if we have watermelon, strawberries, apples, etc. I'll also use whatever veggies are on sale and then our frozen ones for variety. I feel like I save a lot of time and money by making it there every 1 1/2 weeks or so.
I've participated in Bountiful Baskets for a while. There's a huge difference in the quantity of produce your receive if you choose the organic basket. Organic is a lot more expensive, so you don't get as much. Therefore, I don't think it's fair to compare what she got in the organic basket to what you can ad match at Walmart since you're not getting organic at Walmart.
I should have clarified. I looked into the regular basket a long time ago and that's what I calculated the value for. They were comparing organic to organic. I wasn't. Sorry to be confusing. I'm also not against Bountiful Baskets. I know a few people who do it and love it. I've just heard that there are some items in there that you wouldn't typically buy. Some people waste it, others get creative and/or share. I could use a little adventure and creativity from time to time, so it might be good for me. Enjoy whatever way you get healthy food for you family!
So to clarify, can I just show up to one of the locations with the $10 and fill my box? Or do you need to sign up ahead of time? .
You show up with $10, write your name and email (probably optional) on a list and start filling. I just got back from Walmart and noticed those containers of tomatoes are $3.88 each!!! It really is a tremendous deal!! If you try, let us know how it goes.
I most definitely will let you know. The containers of tomatoes are what is inspiring me to try this. I splurge every so often on one of those containers and get so excited cuz they are so good. I'm excited to try it tomorrow!
Just to clarify . . . no guarantees on those tomatoes. My location didn't have them and I have no idea if they did earlier or not. I got there several hours after it opened. I went to an all day location that was available last weekend. I hope it's good!!
Costco has 2lbs of Nature Sweet Cherubs for $4.99. I bought them Wednesday night and there two handfulls left. My kids can't keep their hands out of the container!
My sister doesn't know this yet (she'll get a call from a rude sister much too early very soon) :) . . but we're going to check out the one near her (near Bell) this morning . . . and then go hit some garage sales. :) I hope they have more of those tomatoes. My kids can go through those quickly. We just made a bunch of salsa last night with the other ones. Yummy! My kids can go through two cucumbers with their lunch of for a snack too. Yesterday, my daughter ate one all by herself — a big one!! I still have a few from last week, but I'm almost ready to reload. :) Then, I'll have to find several people to give some food to. It's a lot of food!! Off I go soon!
If any of you are in Mesa, American Discount Foods had the tomato packages on sale 3 for a $1.00.
I do BB, and I’m not entirely convinced it’s the best deal- I think I could go to different stores and shop sales and perhaps do the same and get what i normally would eat. I do try to volunteer and the I’ll get a few extras, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it. Food is getting pretty expensive these days, so it would be nice to figure out what’s the most economical!
What did she think about Bountiful Basket?
She and a friend tried tje organic one, for the first time last weekend. They both decided it wasn't worth it. They ended up with some things they didn't even know what they were. My friend liked the fact that she was inspired to try a new recipe, though. The selections were alright, but they decided that they could watch for sales and/or go to Costco for cheaper. I've heard others who like it, so it must be close to a good deal. :) I've never tried it. I look at it and knew I get it cheaper by doing ad match at Walmart. I love ad matching on produce there — especially the Hispanic market ads. There are super buys at each of those and you can get them all in one place! I highly recommend it, though you can't always count on everything on your list being there or looking good. I had to pass on the cantaloupe today since it looked horrible. :(
Where do you get the Hispanic market ads? I think you are referring to places like Food for Less and Pro's Ranch market. Since there are not any of these stores near me they aren't in my local newspaper. Are they online and will WM match online ads?
I get them in the mail. I haven't tried looking online or asked about printing them out, but you should be able to. Their new policy states that you don't need the ad to get the price. http://walmartstores.com/10563.aspx I'm skeptical about that, but that's what it says. The places I ad match for are: Food City, Pros Ranch Market, Rancho Market (IGA), and Sprouts. Sometimes I do the major stores too. I don't know if they'll all have online ads for you or not. Good luck! Let me know what you find out.
I did Bountiful Baskets once when a friend raved about it. I thought it was so-so. Personally, I wasn't too impressed, but my house is full of picky eaters so I gave away about half of my basket. I ad match at Walmart like Juli mentioned, usually taking advantage of the Hispanic Market ads to get great deals. However, I think for people who like a wide variety and would prefer not to have to look at ads, Bountiful Baskets is definitely cheaper than retail, so I really think it just depends what you're looking for.
